Physical Development Can Lead To Eating Disorders
What is an eating disorder?
Eating disorders are dangerous and in some cases deadly conditions that are characterized by abnormal eating patterns.
Example:
Abby's mom made a comment about how she is gaining weight. After this comment by her mother she stopped eating and began running everyday. She did her best not to eat anything and if she did she would hear her mothers voice saying, "you are starting to gain weight and you need to fix that."
Connections to my story
I have struggled off and on with my eating disorder. I would not eat all day and maybe have a snack, but then would beat myself up over eating. I had comments made to me by my mother about how I was gaining weight or how if I keep eating the way I do I will get fat.
Eating disorders are very real and have affected me and still do to this day. The worst that it got was when I had just gotten out of a mental health facility and I weighed 90 pounds. I am 5'2 and I came out weighing 90 pounds and my doctors were concerned for my health. I was so concerned with looking a certain way or being a certain weight because of comments that were made to me.
Application in my future career
Knowing that eating disorders mostly affect girls and knowing the signs is so important. I plan to be a music educator and knowing the signs of an eating disorder as well as going through that I am better equipped to help those struggling.
In my classroom I will provide support to everyone and will always be there to help students. I will promote healthy eating habits making sure my students are doing alright. I will also show them that music can be an outlet for things they might struggle with.
