Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory
Vygotsky's Theory
Vygotsky's sociocultural theory is that children learn through interactions and their environment.
Example:
Kim grew up in a Christian home and went to church every Sunday morning. Her parents instilled biblical values in her. She grew up and did the same for her kids and raised them and took them to church every Sunday.
Connections To My Story
I grew up in Louisiana about 6 1/2 hours away from Memphis.
Growing up I was shaped by the Louisiana culture. I grew up learning how to cook gumbo and other Louisiana foods and I grew up fishing, mud riding, crawfishing, swimming in the creeks. As I grew up and now that I have moved to Memphis for school I have realized how my culture has affected me.
I thought gumbo was a normal thing everywhere during the winter. I have comments made about my accent on a daily basis when I'm out. Respect is huge thing in Louisiana I remember my mama would get me if I did not say yes/no ma'am or yes/no sir. Also to respect your elders was a huge thing. I also realized that some of our customs are different from up here. I remember celebrating Mardi Gras and having homemade king cake. We had crawfish boils and would watch football (LSU tigers of course).
Application To My Future Career
It is important to know that different cultures have different customs, beliefs, and accents.
Knowing this can be helpful when I am teaching. It is important to know your students and where they have come from or how they have been raised.
